There are a number of big cultural squares in the world where a variety of partners take the lead in using placemaking and place management techniques to improve the square/area in a structural way. Schouwburgplein Rotterdam with the Seven Square Endeavour program is one of them. Bryant Park in New York is famous. La Marina is an upcoming example. Together with experts from Rotterdam (a.o. Karen van der Spek, Jeroen de Leeuw, Emiel Arends), New York (a.o. Jeffrey Shumaker, Ethan Kent), Valencia (a.o. Ramon Marrades) we explore the secrets of the success of working on cultural squares. We look at placemaking, place management and link to creative bureaucracy and other subjects. In Rotterdam cultural and sustainable parties took the lead, in Valencia the government, in New York market parties. What would happen if we’d combine their business cases in one square. Could this lead to the optimal business case and place management models. We come with a call for proposals for squares who want to join the frontrunners.
