As professionals of the city using co-creation and inclusive methods, we are often faced with a recurrent challenge: how to succeed at mobilizing people? How to reach those who don’t have time, who have other concerns than improving public space, or other good reasons not to engage for that matter? On the other side what are private and public actors afraid of? What are reasons for them not to commit?

Actually there is a whole list of different reasons, justifications or excuses that prevent us from engaging.
Actors of the city should consider more closely the key levers and barriers to (in)action in order to avoid an increasing inequality and segregation. This is important in order to engage more people around the transformation of public spaces, of cities, and hopefully of the planet.

In this collaborative workshop, we will identify and break down some of the barriers that prevent people from taking action, using creative problem solving methods. We will use a concrete example in the context of Amsterdam around retail offering, where specific barriers to engagement where faced. You are welcome to bring your own behaviour examples!
