Unsafe cities and public spaces are well-known challenges. Each young person has the right to live in a safe and livable urban environment. Placemaking has been applied successfully in different parts of the world in order to increase safety in public spaces by engaging citizens, municipalities, property owners and other actors to find new ways to reinvent and programme places that attract people and where they want to linger. The presentation and workshop will focus on various components of situational crime prevention, the nature of safety and the fundamental gender differences which will impact how placemaking can be applied. Further, the workshop will directly link to the practice of open source sharing of best placemaking practices and the inclusion of youth into urban planning with a special focus on safety and security.
