This session looks at tackling urban challenges through different lenses - the practical interventions and policy implementations - towards sustainable change, with a particular focus on coastal cities around the globe. Experts with diverse experiences will share their contribution to improving sustainability and resilience in our cities - from waste management to climate mitigation, as well as a participatory perspective to reduce the effects of climate change.

María Ruiz de Gopegui Aramburu shares the insights from an extensive study on the climate adaptation policies of 100 waterfront cities, and their relation to resiliency design for the built environment and public space.

Laska Nenova will talk about how placemaking, tactical urbanism and artistic urban interventions about waste management, recycling culture and littering prevention have the potential to raise awareness for sustainable change, and impact behavior in day-to-day life in cities around Europe.

Anna W. I. Au presents the case study on Inner Harbour Area of Macau SAR, where at least a super typhoon is expected per year due to climate change. Despite the catastrophe brought by typhoons, there is an opportunity to integrate top-down driven redesign with more tactical placemaking interventions for mitigation.

We will talk about the challenges of climate change, and aim to unravel how a more co-creative approach is necessary to tackle such a complex challenge ahead. We will study the experience of La Marina de Valencia and end with a walkshop around the area, where potentials for concrete urban actions might be spotted.
